Iranian Scientists Develop New Drug Delivery System through Radiation http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.php?nn=9003010175

Iranian researchers in close collaboration with their Canadian colleagues managed to devise a novel drug delivery system which involves radiotherapy by harmless infrared radiation. "We focused on the application of harmless infrared radiation with wavelength about 980 nm in radiation-guided drug delivery process," Nourmohammadian, the researcher in chief, explained. 

"Since these waves cannot provide the adequate energy amount to initiate the photochemical reaction, we have employed special nanoparticles to convert them into high-energy ultraviolet waves at molecular surfaces. This results in precise drug liberation and delivery in terms of both location and amount." He also explained about the results of the research, noting,

"We succeeded in the synthesis of di(carboxymethoxy)benzoin-based compounds and their attachment to lanthanide nanoparticles. Subsequently, the prepared compound was irradiated by laser beams (980 nm wavelength) and the photochemical reaction as well as the liberation of the target species was investigated." "Spectroscopic analyses indicated that the liberation speed of the target component had been almost the same for comparative experiments with UV and the proposed harmless IR irradiations. This proves the efficiency of this newly-introduced system." 

To achieve the mentioned objectives,the researchers fabricated a colorless compound whose characteristics are as follows:-It is capable of attaching to the drug: In response to UV irradiation, the drug part is detached from the compound and is converted to its effective/active form.-It is photosensitive and does not impose huge radiation demand-It is capable of clinging to nanoparticles.-It is subsequent to drug release;the remnant compound is inverted into a colorful and detectable disposable so that the amount of drug release is tractable.-The target compounds are prepared as active nanoparticles.
