Iran's War on Narcotics: Police Seize Tons of Illicit Drugs in Southern Iran http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.php?nn=9002141046

Iranian Law Enforcement Police forces have seized large volumes of narcotics in the country's Southern province of Hormozgan during the last 45 days, a senior provincial police chief announced on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters Hormozgan's Police Chief Mohammad Ali Akhoundi told reporters that police forces have seized 3,103 kg of different types of narcotics during the last 45 days since the beginning of the current Iranian years. He added that police have also disbanded 14 drug rings and arrested 422 drug-traffickers and dealers during the said period. 

The Iranian police measures along eastern borders have forced drug-traffickers to resort to other routes, including the Sea of Oman and the Persian Gulf, for smuggling their drug cargos which originate in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Iran, located at the crossroad of international drug smuggling from Afghanistan to Europe, has taken new security measures in its border provinces following several attacks by terrorists and drug traffickers at its Eastern and Western borders. The anti-drug squads of the Iranian Law Enforcement Police have intensified their countrywide campaign against drug-trafficking through staging long-term systematic operations since last year. According to the statistical figures released by the UN, Iran ranks first among the world countries in preventing entry of drugs and decreasing demand for narcotics.
