World Bank Group President Robert Zoellick has announced here up to USD 6 billion in new support over the next two years for Egypt and Tunisia "linked to progress by the two post-revolutionary countries to modernize their economies so they provide more opportunity for their people."Zoellick said in a statement ahead of this week's Group of Eight (G8) meeting in France that "the people of the Middle East and North Africa want dignity, respect, jobs and the chance for a better life.""Fulfilling the promise of the Arab Spring will mean real reforms that deepen inclusion, promote participation and expand opportunity," he added.He affirmed "our support,

and that of others, can sustain momentum and accelerate progress, but only if coupled with real reform."Zoellick indicated that USD 4.5 billion was available to Egypt "over the next 24 months as part of a potential package including an International Monetary Fund programme to address budget and reserve shortfalls and reforms that strengthen its credit and investment prospects." The support includes USD 1billion for Egypt's budget this year linked to governance and openness reforms with a further USD 1 billion available next year dependant on progress.

The balance would be made up of investment lending for specific projects, financing for private businesses and political risk and guarantees.The World Bank is already working on a USD 200 million support programme for labour intensive public infrastructure and is disbursing another USD 1 billion over the next 24 months from existing loans.As for Tunisia, Zoellick said USD 1 billion in support for the budget and for investment projects could be available in addition to the USD 500 million already announced by the World Bank as part of a USD 1.2 billion package 

from the African Development Bank and European donors for a Governance and Opportunity Programme"to support Tunisia's efforts in freedom of association; access to information; transparency in public procurement; beneficiary participation in service delivery; and retraining of unemployed workers."In this regard, Zoellick said the World Bank was working closely with the IMF and other multilateral development banks on an integrated approach to stabilizing and modernizing the economies of the region.
